课前十分钟——My tutoring experience(黄颖)

This summer holiday, I stayed in Nanjing for about one month and worked as a tutor. I have meant to make much money on my own and save it as my living expenses. However, as a result of my crazy consumption, very little of my salary was left.
During that period, I must bear the hotness and run between three families.
I taught three students of different ages. Because of the difference of age,I had to try different teaching routes.
One of my students was a high school student and my task was to explain all the grammars that a senior student had to master in English learning. At first, I struggled for a while:‘How can I deal with such a big boy? Supposing he is a rebellious one? ’ However, facts proved that all my worry was unnecessary. He was easy-going and always listened to me carefully and put forward questions timely.
The first lesson was about attributive clause. Still remember the night before the first lesson, being nervous, I prepared lessons until midnight. The next day, I tried my best to convince his parents, saying’I am a responsible and careful person.’ In fact, I did perform my best explaining all the important parts in detail clearly.
For a long period of time,I had been actively preparing lessons and explaining theories exercises. I even told him some learning skill which I had concluded when I was a high school student. Of course, in the process of teaching, I met up with some problems beyond my ability. In this case, I always turned to my high school teacher for help instead of letting go of it.
Through this tutoring experience, I deeply realized that things seldom work out as well as imagined. Once I had seen teacher as the best career. Only when I became the so-called teacher did I feel the sufferings. During the first lesson, I had just taught about 40 minutes when my throat began to ache. However, I sticked to the very end.
All dreams will bloom and all efforts will pay off in the near or far future. Recently, I have received a call form the boy`s mother. She appreciated me for my hard work and hoped that I could continue to tutor her son if I was free of time.
Another student I coached is a 13-year-old girl. Every time what she really cared about is whether I stayed at her home for two whole hours or more. In her opinion, the longer I stayed there, the more valuable her money will be. She never cared about what I taught and how much she could learn form my lesson. What she said always made me feel uncomfortable. Maybe it was just a question of age. Anyway, I tolerated all her unfriendly words and tried my best to help her improve.
In the last lesson, I politely pointed out that she should be positive to explain her knowledge and she should be aware of the basic manners when dealing with others. She listened quietly and didn`t retort upon me.
I have to mention that I also tutored a 5-year-old handsome boy. You should never ask a kindergarten child to keep the rule. As you guys can imagine, the first day I went to his home, he had just been amusing himself and I was completely ignored. So the next day, I had to turn to the common way–I cheated him that there was a bad man downstairs and as long as he was not obedient, he would be caught. In the way, he began to listen to me. We drew pictures, counted numbers and performed English dialogue together. To conclude, we had a wonderful time.
This summer holiday, I endured different difficulties and sticked to the end. To some extent, I am willing to applaud myself. And thanks to the challenges, I promoted myself both in knowledge and social ability. And this experience will have a lifelong effect on my future life. That`s what counts.
